Reciprocity
This series of paintings explores the theme of human connection. The works depict pairs of close friends: the first two paintings portray friendships I admire, while the final painting depicts my own closest friendship. I believe people thrive in community, and that dependence, vulnerability, and cooperation allow us to learn from one another and grow into more complex and beautiful individuals. Through these paintings, I seek to record and honor moments of reciprocity and care.
The square compositions are reminiscent of Polaroid photographs, evoking snapshots of my loved ones existing together in moments of connection. In one painting, two pieces of yarn stitch the figures together at the arm. This stitching serves as a metaphor for the bonds that form between people: threads that connect separate individuals and create opportunities for healing, growth, and deeper connection.
Each painting is paired with an audio interview conducted with the corresponding pair of friends. Friendships are often accepted as they are without taking the time to consider why a particular person is so important in one’s life. However, these conversations reveal how each person defines closeness and understands their relationship with the other. They also present friendship as a process of mutual transformation in which individuals shape and are shaped by one another. The interview process encourages reflection, honesty, and vulnerability, prompting participants to articulate the value of their connections.
